Register to win the opportunity to train as a scientist-astronaut candidate with Project PoSSUM and the International Institute of Astronautical Sciences while advocating for science education within the LGBTQ community.

You may enter your application anytime before the contest deadline of 1 September 2019; however, it is recommended to submit your application by 1 August since the voting period will be enabled then. To submit your application, please enter the following information below:

 

  1. Your name
  2. Your nationality, email address, phone number, and preferred pronouns
  3. A written summary of an experiment that you would be interested in conducting on an aircraft (up to 70k ft of altitude), micorgravity aircraft, balloon (up to 130k ft of altitude), or suborbital spacecraft (to 350k ft of altitude). Include science objective(s), method, and anticipated results.
  4. A good photo of you in action!
  5. A video of 3-5 minute duration showing your interests and expertise in science, space, inclusivity, and LGBTQ equality.

The Out Astronaut Contest: Phase One Rules and Prizes

For who:

The Out Astronaut Contest is open to those who identify as part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community and are involved in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. We are looking for individuals who openly embrace their role in the LGBTQ community and want to serve as role models to LGBTQ youth and become representatives of their community as pioneers of astronautical science. Contestants shall also meet the following requirements:

  • Age at time of application: 18-39 years
  • Residency: US, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, or Central America
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Engineering, or Technology field OR currently enrolled in an accredited degree program
  • Ability to pass a FAA Class III Flight Physical
  • LGBTQ community member

 

Awards:

Project PoSSUM has committed a full scholarship for one individual’s tuition to attend the Advanced PoSSUM Academy this September 2019, including lodging and round-trip flight and other travel costs for winning candidate. All finalists will receive an Out Astronaut Project T-Shirt and a Project PoSSUM Scientist-Astronaut Manual. The award winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to attend the September 2019 Advanced PoSSUM Academy Program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

 

Determining the 12 Phase One Finalists: The initial 12 finalists will be determined through a social media contest where your peers will vote on the merit of your video submission. If 12 submissions are not received by 1 August 2019, the contest will be extended and the new Phase One submission deadline will be 1 February 2020.

 

Determining the Contest Winner: the Out Astronaut Project Executive Team and LGBT Advisory Committee will decide the winning contestant based an assessment of the contestants 1) Personal interview, 2) letters of reference, 3) essay, 4) character evaluation form, and 5) video submission.
